About Me
I once wrote a poem for an experimental writing module at university entitled ’I am...’, which was nothing more than a collection of unrelated sentences I generated using an internet search engine. My tutor thought it was interesting, if a little stale (I later found out that this has been done many times before), but admitted that he enjoyed reading it more than he enjoyed reading some of my fellow classmates’ long and unnecessarily complex pieces because it was mercifully simple. There are times for long sentences, which I am very fond of, but now is not one of them. Below is a nice, simple list of facts about me. Anything more important can be discussed in the proper way, over a cup of tea.
  • I have a long list of peculiar nicknames courtesy of my brother and sisters, but most people call me Debs.

  • Ignoring frequent (and hopeful) suggestions from my Dad that I go into the more lucrative field of Law like my sister before me, I followed my heart and chose to study English Literature at the University of Southampton where I attained a First-Class degree last year.

  • As I write this I am looking out of my window at
the rooftops in the city of Cuenca in southern Ecuador. I have been living here for the past five months during which time I’ve been teaching English at a university, learning Spanish, travelling the country, designing a website and writing, writing, writing.

  • I won’t lie and say that I write every day, even though that’s what aspiring writers are supposed to do, but there are days when I will write five thousand words in one sitting, which I reckon averages out.

  • I would love more than anything for someone to pay me to read books, write stories and bake cakes.

  • Like Cassandra in I Capture the Castle, I too could look at stationers’ shops forever and ever.
